Why tarmac

Practical, tough and good value

Built properly, from the ground up

Over 20 years of getting the groundwork right, so the finish stays right.

Handles heavy use

A properly laid tarmac drive copes with cars, vans and farm vehicles without breaking up.

Good value

Usually costs less than block paving or concrete, so it suits long rural drives and yards.

Fast to install

Most home driveways are finished within a few days, so disruption is kept short.

Easy upkeep

An occasional sweep and wash keeps it tidy, and small areas can be repaired without redoing the whole drive.

Honest advice

Is it right for your property?

We lay every surface, so we have no reason to push one. Here is the straight answer.

A great choice if

  • You have a long drive, farm entrance, yard or private road
  • You want the best value per square metre
  • The surface sees vans, trailers or tractors
  • You want the job done quickly with little disruption

Think twice if

  • You want decorative patterns or a choice of colours
  • You are paving a front garden in England without a drainage plan
  • You want a permeable surface for a wet, low-lying plot

How it works

How we lay your tarmac driveway

  1. Step 1

    Site visit and free quote

We measure up, look at access and drainage, and explain your options.

  2. Step 2

    Preparation

The old surface and any soft ground are removed, and the area is levelled and compacted.

  3. Step 3

    Sub-base

Crushed stone is laid and compacted to give a solid foundation.

  4. Step 4

    Tarmac

The tarmac is laid in layers and rolled for a smooth, even finish that sheds water.

  5. Step 5

    Edges

Edging is fitted to keep the surface neat and stop it spreading.

  6. Step 6

    Clean-up

We tidy the site and tell you when the drive is ready. Please keep cars off for the first 3 days.

FAQs

Questions we get asked

Still not sure?

Talk to the team who will actually do the job.

Yes. Tarmac materials cost less than block paving, and because it is much quicker to lay, the labour cost is lower too.

Properly laid and looked after, a tarmac driveway should last more than 15 years with very little maintenance. Heavy traffic or severe weather can occasionally cause cracks that need a touch-up.

Please keep cars off a newly surfaced driveway for the first 3 days. Tarmac is at its softest while it hardens, and driving on it too early can leave dents and marks.

There are two main grades. Open-graded tarmac is more permeable and is often used to stop water pooling on the surface. Close-graded tarmac is denser and more compact, so water runs off rather than soaking in.
