Why tarmac in the Borders
The practical choice for rural properties

Built properly, from the ground up
Over 20 years of getting the groundwork right, so the finish stays right.
Built for Borders weather
Hard winters, frost and heavy rain test any surface. Tarmac on a well-compacted base copes with freeze and thaw far better than loose gravel.
Good value for long drives
Rural properties often have long driveways and farm tracks. Tarmac covers large areas for less than block paving or resin.
Quick to lay
Most domestic driveways are finished in a few days, keeping disruption to a minimum.
Easy to look after
Little more than an occasional sweep and wash, and small repairs can be patched without relaying the whole surface.

Honest advice
Is it right for your property?
We lay every surface, so we have no reason to push one. Here is the straight answer.
A great choice if
- You have a long drive, farm entrance, yard or private road
- You want the best value per square metre
- The surface sees vans, trailers or tractors
- You want the job done quickly with little disruption
Think twice if
- You want decorative patterns or a choice of colours
- You are paving a front garden in England without a drainage plan
- You want a permeable surface for a wet, low-lying plot

How it works
How we lay your tarmac driveway
- Step 1
Free site visit and quote
We visit your property, measure the area, check drainage and access, and give you a clear, no-obligation quote.
- Step 2
Clearing the ground
The old surface, soil and debris are dug out to the right depth so the new drive won't sink or crack.
- Step 3
Building the sub-base
We lay and compact a layer of crushed stone. This is the part that carries the weight, so we never cut corners on it.
- Step 4
Laying the tarmac
Hot tarmac goes down as a binder course and a smooth surface course, each rolled to the right level and falls so water runs off.
- Step 5
Edges and finishing
We fit kerbs or edging to hold the surface in place and tidy the site before we leave.
- Step 6
Ready to use
You can usually walk on it the same day. Please keep cars off for the first 3 days while it hardens.

FAQs
Questions we get asked
Talk to the team who will actually do the job.
Yes. Tarmac materials cost less than block paving, and because it is much quicker to lay, the labour cost is lower too.
Properly laid and looked after, a tarmac driveway should last more than 15 years with very little maintenance. Heavy traffic or severe weather can occasionally cause cracks that need a touch-up.
Please keep cars off a newly surfaced driveway for the first 3 days. Tarmac is at its softest while it hardens, and driving on it too early can leave dents and marks.
There are two main grades. Open-graded tarmac is more permeable and is often used to stop water pooling on the surface. Close-graded tarmac is denser and more compact, so water runs off rather than soaking in.
