There is no single best driveway surface. There is only the best one for your drive, your budget and how you use it.
Tarmac: the workhorse
Tarmac materials cost less than block paving, and because it is much quicker to lay, the labour cost is lower too. It handles cars, vans and farm vehicles well, which is why it is so popular for long rural drives, yards and private roads.
- Lifespan: properly laid and looked after, more than 15 years
- Upkeep: an occasional sweep and wash; small areas can be patched
- Watch out for: keep cars off for three days after laying
Block paving: the designer's choice
Different sizes, shapes, colours and laying patterns mean you can create almost any look. Borders, inlays and herringbone patterns can define parking areas or tie the drive into a patio.
- Lifespan: up to 20 to 30 years with proper installation and maintenance
- Upkeep: regular cleaning, re-sanding joints and sealing every 2 to 5 years
- Bonus: a damaged block can be lifted and replaced on its own

Resin bound: the modern finish
A smooth, seamless stone finish in a wide choice of colours. It is permeable, has no loose stones and needs little more than a sweep and a rinse.
- Lifespan: very durable when installed on a sound base and looked after
- Upkeep: minimal; weeds cannot grow through it
- Bonus: can often be laid over sound existing tarmac or concrete
The cheapest surface on day one is not always the cheapest surface over ten years.
So which should you choose?
